갤러리 진선, 오채현 개인전  '돌 호랭이 납신다' 개최

40여 년간 한국적인 정서를 담아내고 사람과 공존하는 친근한 호랑이를 경주 화강석으로 표현해 온 오채현 작가의 개인전 ‘돌 호랭이 납신다(The Happy Tiger Descends)’가 서울 종로구 삼청동 소재 갤러리 진선 2층에서 오는 4월 22일부터 5월 16일까지 열린다.

이번 전시는 작가의 대표작 '해피 타이거(Happy Tiger)' 시리즈를 새롭게 변화시켜 작은 호랑이 조각부터 대형 호랑이 조각까지 총 14점의 신작과  호랑이 드로잉 작품도 함께 전시될 예정이다.

호랑이는 단군신화부터 고구려 고분벽화, 조선시대의 맹호도, 민화까지 한민족의 상징으로 대표되는 동물이다. 작가는 어려서부터 호랑이와 관련된 민간신화를 접하며 호랑이에 대한 호기심을 가지게 되었고 그 관심이 그대로 이어져 민족의 본질과 전통미술, 우리 미술이 가지는 원형에 대해 탐구하기 시작했다고 한다.

특히 민화(民畫) 속 호랑이는 맹수로서의 두려운 존재가 아니라 친숙하고 해학적인 존재로 묘사되는데 작가는 이점에 주목하여 호랑이 조각에 자신만의 독창적인 감성과 이해를 더해 사랑스럽게 정면을 응시하는 호랑이, 크게 웃는 호랑이, 서로를 다정하게 껴안는 호랑이 등 무서운 모습은 드러내지 않고 오히려 장난기 가득하고 익살스러운 돌 호랑이들을 만들어냈다.

여러 작품들 중에서 두세 마리의 호랑이가 함께 있는 '해피 패밀리(Happy Family)'는 현대 사회가 가지는 작은 규모의 가족을 상징적으로 표현했다. 서로의 얼굴을 맞대며 온기를 나누는 이 작품은 정서적 결속과 강한 유대감을 형상화하고, 머리 혹은 꼬리에 내려앉은 ‘작은 새’는 가족 간의 소통과 교감의 의미를 가지고 있다. 학업과 취업으로 인해 거주지를 달리하는 가족도 일상적 삶을 공유하지는 못하지만 단단한 유대관계로 이어져 있는 가족으로서의 속성은 환경의 지배를 받지 않는다는 뜻도 내포하고 있다.

작가는 “한국 문화에 전 세계인의 관심이 집중되는 요즘, 관객이 이번 전시로 전통적 소재와 우리 민족의 해학적 요소를 이해하며 정겨운 가족애에 대해 다시 한 번 생각해 볼 수 있는 기회가 될 수 있길 바란다”고 말했다.

오채현 작가는 경북대학교 미술학과 및 동 대학원을 졸업하고, 이탈리아 까라라 국립미술대학에서 조소를 전공했으며  국내외 아트페어와 40여회의 개인전을 통해 다양한 조각 작품을 대중에게 선보이고 있다.

Gallery Jinsun to Host Oh Chae Hyun’s Solo Exhibition “The Happy Tiger Descends”

The solo exhibition by artist Oh Chae Hyun, who has spent over 40 years capturing Korean sentiments and depicting friendly tigers coexisting with humans using granite from Gyeongju, titled “The Happy Tiger Descends,” will be held on the 2nd floor of Gallery Jinsun in Samcheong-dong, Jongro-gu, Seoul, from April 22 to May 16.         

This exhibition features a new take on the artist's representative works, the “Happy Tiger” series, showcasing a total of 14 new works ranging from small to large tiger sculptures, along with tiger paintings.

The tiger is an animal that symbolizes Korean people, spanning from the Dangun myth to Goguryeo tomb murals, and paintings of fierce tigers and folk art from the Joseon Dynasty. The artist states that he became curious about tigers after encountering folk myths related to them from a young age, and that this interest continued, leading him to begin exploring the essence of the Korean people, traditional art, and the archetypes inherent in our traditional art.

In particular, the tigers in folk paintings are depicted not as fearsome beasts but as familiar and humorous creatures. The artist focused on this point and added his own unique sensibility and understanding to the tiger sculptures, creating stone tigers that do not reveal a scary appearance but are instead full of playfulness and humor, such as lovely tigers gazing straight ahead, tigers laughing heartily, and tigers affectionately hugging each other.

Among the various works, “Happy Family,” which features two to three tigers together, represents a small-scale family of modern society. This piece, depicting the tigers sharing warmth with their faces close together, embodies an emotional bond and strong connection, while the “small birds” perched on their heads or tails signify communication and communion within the family. It also implies that even families living apart due to studies or employment and unable to share daily lives remain bound through a solid bond. This means that their nature as a family is not controlled by surrounding environments.

The artist said, “In these times when the whole world’s attention is focused on Korean culture, I hope this exhibition will provide an opportunity for the audience to understand traditional themes and the humorous elements of Korean people and to reflect once again on heartwarming love of family.”

Artist Oh Chae Hyun has graduated from the Department of Fine Arts and the Graduate School of Kyungpook National University and has majored in sculpture at the National Academy of Fine Arts in Carrara, Italy. He has been showcasing various sculptural worksto the public through domestic and international art fairs and over 40 solo exhibitions.
